In early December 2007 heavy rains caused severe flooding, mudslides, and damage to many homes in Western Washington. Families suffered huge losses and are now struggling to rebuild and replenish the numerous things that were lost or destroyed in the floods. Hillside Community is responding to God's call to help some of these families at this devastating time. This is a follow-up to provide more information regarding the help for the flood victims in the Centralia and Curtis communities. There are three individual families and one college student that the Cucchiara’s have contact with and are seeking to provide help. The help is planned to be provided in two phases; phase I is to provide immediate needs including the restoration of the building structures and phase II is to provide kitchen appliances and household furnishings to replace all that was lost as a result of the flood. Phase I Kari Reynolds is a Centralia College student who has moved back in with her parents because she lost everything in her apartment including her car. She presently is residing in Toledo. Kari works 2 jobs and attends college full time. An older basic form of transportation would be greatly appreciated. A car provided on a loaner basis for a year would be O.K. as it will take Kari a year to save up from her waitress job at Applebee's to buy a replacement. She would be willing to pay for title transfer and insurance while the car is in her custody. Jan Sorenson, Centralia; Gladys Oravetz, Curtis; and Janelle & Brennan John (newly weds), Curtis all need building materials to restore the dwelling structures. Needed building materials include 3/4" plywood underlayment, drywall, nails and R-19 insulation. After the structures are restored, then paint, floor coverings, blinds and curtains will be needed. Phase II After their homes are put back together (month or so – maybe longer), furniture and appliances will be needed. These include washers, dryers, refrigerators, dishwashers, microwaves, ovens / stoves, dining rooms, living rooms, kitchen tables & chairs. Gladys Oravetz, 81 year old widow is the only one who needs bedroom furniture. Generally, every need is times 3; for the most part every family lost all of their household possessions. Chris Cucchiara will provide transportation from anywhere in Pierce and King counties to move the donations to the restored homes. Chuck & Annette Jung will act as a point of contact for Hillside Community Church to coordinate pick-ups and the list of needs and donations. Phase II items will need to be held by the donor until the items are needed. Because the clean up is so difficult, we are not sure when the items will be moved. Please pray about your involvement. Thanks.
